I too have tried and while I am a fan of their early material, they just got too weird for weirdness' sake in the late 90s through their break. I'm sure Anastasio's chemical problems had a lot to do with it, but the whole band was just mailing it in the last couple of years - despite their evident individual talent.

I've heard mixed reviews coming out of the new tours - I didn't go to any of the Hampton shows, but after listening to SBDs from the shows I have to admit that I should have and I probably would have enjoyed them. I'll go see them if a ticket falls into my lap, but I think we are in different places now and they get filed on the shelf along with my Outlaws albums.

Now Hulaween with String Cheese Incident at Hampton is going to be an entirely different affair - despite the fact that the Disco Crickets are opening both nights.

What I find rather interesting, are all the silly gimicks the band resorted to...

I know interaction with the crowd is fun, but can you picture Jerry teasing the Simpsons theme song in order to get the crowd to respond? Ramrod or Parrish sending beach balls onto the floor at the Hampton Coliseum? How about the Grateful Dead members switching instruments (I know they did thid once). Why didn't the Grateful Dead think of performing entire Beatles albums at shows? Sounds like Phish got bored...
